A path between two frontiers
A historical trek, a timeless route, suspended between past and present... where the beauty of the landscape is the backdrop to one of the most historically significant places of the Great War in our area: Malga Zures. Yes, because the Austro-Hungarian and Italian armies faced each other a few hundred metres away... To reach our destination, we will climb along the Austro-Hungarian defensive line, where the military posts now offer evocative views of Lake Garda...
Route:
We cross the old town of Nago and head towards the vineyards that surround it. We gradually walk along path no. 601, which overlooks the climbing walls and, accompanied by the breezes of the lake, we together visit the barracks, tunnels, gun stations and trenches, which formed the complex Austro-Hungarian line of defence. We reach Malga Zures, which today welcomes us with large sunny meadows but which, in 1915, hosted one of the bloodiest battles in the area during the First World War. Malga Zures always remained firmly in the hands of the Austro-Hungarian army, but the Italian positions were just beyond, at Doss Alt. It is possible to visit the small military cemetery nearby, which has remained a witness to the bloody battles.
A short stop before starting on the way back. We go back to the valley, this time along the ancient mule track (path n. 632), which allows us to admire the imposing cliffs of Nago and their history!
