Lobbia Refuge - Cresta Croce - Adamello Glacier

A spectacular ascent to one of the symbolic places of the White War, so loved by Pope Wojtyla and on the largest glacier in the Italian Alps. From the terrace of the refuge Ai Caduti dell'Adamello you can admire an extraordinary aerial view of the glaciers, the distant Corno Bianco and the articulated ridge leading to Punta Giovanni Paolo II, marked by the famous granite cross (inaugurated in the jubilee year) in memory of Pope John Paul II's visit to these places.

A peak that, besides being famous for its granite cross, is among the peaks of Adamello involved in the war conflict of 1915 - 1918. On its crest, there is still the famous 149/G howitzer, the only piece of artillery left on the Adamello front. This cannon is today a national monument.

Day 1: On the first day, we climb up to the rifugio Ai Caduti dell'Adamello along the spectacular, steep and demanding Matarot equipped path.

Day 2: On the second day we climb to the base of the ridge via a short lookout and then walk along a simple rocky ridge that leads to Punta Giovanni Paolo II where we can admire the cross more than 3 m high. Continuing along the ridge we can reach the post of the Hippopotamus howitzer of the First World War left in memory of the conflict. From here, first via glacier, then along a path back to the valley, passing through the Mandrone refuge.
