Cascata di S.Giovanni, Majella National Park

The F2 path that we will walk along allows us to get to know the river valley of the Vesola torrent, where there is also the well-known Cascata di San Giovanni. The departure and arrival are in Bocca di Valle, near the bridge, where there is a fountain. At the starting point you can visit the sacred cave of Andrea Bafile, hero of the First World War, embellished inside with majolica tiles by Basilio and Tommaso Cascella. The path is comfortable and easy in the first section and can be walked for about 1 km even by people with disabilities. Always bordering the stream, which is dry during the summer, the path climbs steadily until it reaches a small rocky gorge, where the path becomes narrower and climbs on the hydrographic left. You will reach the locality "Cannellucce", where there is a small spring that gushes out from a rock wall. We cross the stream and enter a beech wood, climbing some ramps up to the fork where the path F2 deviates decisively to the left. Continuing along the valley you will soon reach the Cascate di San Giovanni, an obligatory stop of the excursion and the reproduction site of various amphibians. Worth mentioning is the important presence of the Pinguicola fiorii, a small and rare carnivorous plant. We continue, by going back to the fork where we turn right, following the side of the valley and gradually gaining the ridge in a wood characterized by the dominant presence of beech trees. As you descend the vegetation begins to change, from the beech wood you pass through a mixed wood until you reach the clearings of the "Piana della Civita", which owes its name to the presence of a Neolithic settlement, of which, however, there are no evident traces. The area is very scenic and overlooks the nearby Adriatic Sea. The last stretch is rather steep and needs some attention. You go down some metal steps and reach the entrance of the valley in a few hundred metres, where the itinerary ends.
