Aneto is the highest mountain of the whole Pyrenees and, therefore, one of the most popular ascents of this mountain range. The Aneto-Maladeta massif is one of the last ones in the Pyrenees where there are still glaciers. In fact, the normal route to the summit goes over the Aneto glacier, one of the biggest of the Pyrenees. We propose a one-day push to the top, starting from Benasque village. It's a very long day (a minimum of 10 hours journey!, 1.500 meters height gain and loss, and about 15 km distance) but possible for trained and experienced mountaineers. The glacier requires the use of crampons and ice-axe at a basic level. The slopes of the mountain are not very steep and, despite the ice, it is suitable for many climbers. The key point of the climb is known as ´Paso de Mahoma´ (Mahoma Pass), a narrow rocky ridge just before reaching the summit. It´s nor very long (about 30 meters) neither very difficult (a IIIº single pass), but there is exposure. At this point we use harnesses and ropes, to ensure the security of the climbers. The view from the top is very impressive. When the conditions are good we can try to descend over the side-valley of Barrancs, to make a loop and discover different landscapes. This activity is recommended for fit mountaineers with some previous experience.
